Middle schoolers need to feel a sense of belonging, particularly as they begin the journey of figuring out who they are in this world. They need a space where they can comfortably BE who they are. Creating a classroom community of learners where middle schoolers can feel connected to one another, to learn to listen intently to the opinion of others and engage in effective problem solving fosters the development of significant academic and life skills.

When we create respectful relationships with middle schoolers, we increase the likelihood of knowing what they’re passionate about. Tapping into what they wonder about and what they LOVE can be the catalyst, when coupled with the Design Process used in STEM/STEAM, for deep, investigative work…and authentic learning.
