Brain-based learning

Although we subscribe to several adult learning ideologies, our foundation rests on brain-based learning—a comprehensive approach to using current research from neuroscience (Sousa, 2011). Brain-based learning is based on how the brain naturally learns, emphasizing current research about the actual structure and function of the human brain at varying developmental stages (Jenson, 2000). We expect participants to be accountable for their own learning and provide actively engaging opportunities for them to recall information, synthesize ideas, and create representations of their learning. We want participants to be able to recall content-related details of their training experience beyond a two-week period of time.

Alesi Group integrates varied modalities for learning, based on training needs of participants. We work diligently at modelling best practices by: (1) creating a safe climate for learners, (2) limiting lectures to lecturettes, (3) integrating opportunities for experiential learning, (4) providing opportunities for authentic connections with colleagues/peers, (5) providing time for reflective practice, (6) incorporating movement for brain oxygenation, (7) requiring a visual representation of learning where they interpret, synthesize and create representations of their learning, and (8) integrating humor.
