The language we use in response to children’s wonderment, curiosities, discoveries and creative endeavors is pretty important. In an effort to “assess” children’s knowledge, many teachers rely on quiz-like questions seeking the one correct answer—“How many is that?” These questions don’t actually support children’s critical thinking or language development. By asking open ended and reflective questions, we can gain a deeper understanding of what children DO KNOW.
